Let me start off by saying, as a fan of “Parks and Recreation,” it was delightful seeing Andy Dwyer in space.
Although there are certainly a good number of goofball moments, Chris Pratt’s performance was a great balance of criminal, hero, dork, and suave muthafucka. His Starlord really rather perfectly captures the qualities of the Everyman.
And then there’s this.
Let’s recap last weeks episode, Skye was dying so Coulson went to the facility where he was treated hoping to find something there for Skye. They gave Skye GH325, which comes from an alien but it also regenerate tissue in the body. We got to meet Agent Garrett and Triplett and May beat the shit out of Quinn.
This episode picks up exactly where the last episode left off; Lorelei and Jimmy are driving when Jimmy pulls into a biker bar. Lorelei sees a motorcycle and meets Rooster.
Rooster tells Lorelei to get rid of the Jimmy because he is a better man. During this conversation, Lorelei learns that Rooster is the leader of the biker gang, well that makes Rooster a much better choice because he comes with men.
Jimmy comes back upset that Lorelei has left him for someone else but Lorelei doesn’t care and punches him into the car with her Asgardian strength.
Skye is awake, yay the alien drug worked, granted Coulson and Simmons are doing everything to keep Skye from moving around.
Simmons keeps taking blood from Skye because she is trying to figure out what they gave her. Ward comes by to see Skye and tells her she looks better than when she was dying. Wow, Ward, you really know how to sweet-talk the ladies. Simmons has not been able to find anything weird in Skye’s blood. Simmons wants to send the blood samples to the SHIELD labs but Coulson won’t let her.
Coulson’s team is chosen to be the Asgardian welcome wagon for Sif. Ward, May and Fitz drive into the desert to look for the energy wave that will be Lady Sif. While driving the truck the energy wave comes crashing down in front of them. Thankfully, May is a really good driver because she was able stop the truck from running into the energy blast. Lady Sif is shown at the end of the blast letting them know that their world is in grave danger. Earth always seems to be in grave danger.
Back on the plane, Coulson is excited to see Sif because he had seen her fight in New Mexico in the first Thor movie against the giant robot creature that Loki sent down. When Sif first sees Coulson she freaks out because Thor had told her that Coulson was dead. Did Thor bring pictures of the Avengers with him to Asgard? I get it that he talked about his time on Earth but how would she know what any of them looked like? Coulson tells her that he is not dead and Sif informs him that Thor will be happy to hear it because he considers Coulson a friend. Coulson then asks Sif if he can be the one to tell Thor.
Now that we have the whole Coulson is alive thing out-of-the-way, Sif can talk about important issues like who Lorelei is and what her powers are. Six hundred years ago Lorelei led an army on Asgard, I should mention an army of only men. She was defeated and contained in a prison until recently (I am guessing Thor: The Dark World) and she came to Earth through one of Loki’s secret passageways. Lorelei can only control men because they have an inherent weakness that women do not have. Lorelei can control men with her voice but for the really strong ones she has to use touch. Sif has a collar with her that can contain Lorelei’s powers.
Lorelei is now wearing biker chick clothes because that is what happens when you hang out with bikers.
Apparently everything on Earth is bothering Lorelei so the guys can barely do anything. During this scene, we find out that Rooster is married, Lorelei is wearing his wife’s clothes, and his wife owns the bar. Since Rooster’s wife is annoying Lorelei, Lorelei commands Rooster to kills his wife. Now the interesting part is that Lorelei cannot change who the men are she just controls them. Rooster does feel bad about killing his wife.
Back on the plane, Coulson decides to ask Sif if she has ever seen any blue alien creatures. He would like to know what that was that he saw in the facility. Sif names off a few aliens that she has seen that are blue, one of which being the Kree.
Most people are speculating that the GH is a Kree since they play a big part in Guardians of the Galaxy. The team finds the bar where Lorelei is hiding out at with her biker gang.
The team gets to the bar where they find some cops; Coulson asks them if they have seen Lorelei and they tell him yes, she is beautiful. Great, Lorelei got to the cops; the cops start shooting at them.
Sif saves the day when she kicks a trailer over thus giving them cover.
Sif goes into the bar and begins a fight with Lorelei, after she beat up the biker gang when they try to stop her.
Coulson tells Ward to go around to the back of the bar. Rooster begins to fight with Ward, which of course is a wasted fight. Lorelei watches the fight from the top of the roof. She naturally realizes that Ward is a much better prospect. Lorelei does her mind control thing on Ward, I blame this one on Coulson, Sif said that Lorelei is able to control men not women, I would have sent in May. Lorelei and Ward ride off on one of the motorcycles.
Unfortunately, the collar to contain Lorelei was damaged in the fight so they put Fitz on it.
Skye is tired of sitting around and doing nothing so Coulson has her use her hacker skills to find all of Ward’s secret hiding places; ID’s, money, guns, etc. Outside Simmons gets frustrated that Coulson won’t let her send the samples to the SHIELD labs. Simmons gets pissing off, yells at Coulson and tells him that she will send the sample to the lab. I was so proud of Simmons in this scene; it was great to see some fire in her. Coulson tells her that will not happen until they have talked to Nick Fury. Unfortunately, Nick Fury is MIA at this time and if he doesn’t want to be found he won’t be.
Ward takes Lorelei to Caesar’s palace, which Lorelei likes. She is even happier with her choice of Ward. Ward of course tells Lorelei that he cares for her more the person on the team he has feelings for, oh poor May. Lorelei continues her mind control of Ward because she loves his berserker rage. If Ward gives Lorelei an army, she will give him a present. Ward and Lorelei have sexy time in one of Caesar’s palace rooms. Well at least Ward got lucky out of it, that is more than the other two guys can say.
Of course, there is the after sex or coitus as Sheldon would say scene, Lorelei tells Ward that she never wants to be imprisoned again. Ward tells her that he will make sure that she is never imprisoned again. Ward might be tough but I don’t see him winning in a fight against Sif.
Lady Sif is cleaning/sharping her awesome double-bladed sword. May asks if she can play with it and Sif lets her. We learn that May knows how to use a sword she just prefers her hands. Sif tells May that Ward is not the man that she knows and he might kill her. Sif sounds this like she might have some personal experience in the matter. May tells her that Ward won’t kill her, but he can try, props to May for knowing that she is a badass and a better fighter then Ward.
The team finds the room where Ward and Lorelei had sexy time and May notices the unmade bed. Coulson asks May back on the plane if the fact that something happened between Lorelei and Ward is going to be a problem. May tells him that it is not an issue, but Coulson knows that May wouldn’t tell him if it was. Coulson asks May since Ward and her are similar what would he do next. Fitz tells Sif that he fixed the collar and invites her to look it over. The plane starts up and begins to fly off, May tell Coulson that she would take out the team. Fitz locks Sif in the room and Ward is flying the plane.
Fitz stops Coulson from getting to Sif, but Coulson is smart and pretends to also be under Lorelei’s control in order to get Fitz to tell him what happened to Skye and Simmons. Ward pushes the button that opens the roof of the interrogation room, which causes Sif to fly out of the room. May finds Lorelei and begins to fight her because well May wants her plane back. Granted May doesn’t stand a chance against Lorelei because well Lorelei is Asgardian. Ward comes in and Lorelei kisses him and then tells May that Ward said he had feeling for someone who is not her. May of course really does not care because well she is just sleeping with Ward.
Coulson goes down to the where Simmons and Skye are and frees them but not before almost getting his head bashed in by Simmons. Simmons was not sure if he was normal or under mind control. Skye tells Coulson that Sif was thrown out of the plane but Coulson tells them that Sif is Asgardian so they should open up the door. Skye does this and Sif climbs back into the room just in time to find Lorelei grabbing her sword. Lorelei tried to get Sif to not fight her and just let her be. Sif will not allow that to happen so then Lorelei taunts Sif about her unrequited loves, namely Thor. We all knew that Sif had a thing for Thor, now it has been confirmed. The Sif and Lorelei fight and during the fight Sif grabs the other part of her sword and it breaks into two pieces, now they both have swords.
May and Ward fight as well during this time which ends with May and Ward on the floor with a gun pointed at May’s head. Fitz sees Simmons running around the plane and he goes off to grabs her. It seems like he is trying to protect her from Lorelei. As Fitz is running after Simmons, Coulson punches him in the face and knocking him out. Sif manages to best Lorelei as Lorelei taunts her about knowing what Thor is like. It seems that Lorelei controlled Thor and caused that six hundred year war. Sif managed to put the collar on Lorelei, which stops her from talking. May and Ward are lying on the floor, Ward apologizes before he shoots May.
Nothing comes out of the gun because May had taken the clip out. Ward gets up and says that he is fine and Sif confirms it but May punches him anyway. I don’t blame May, Ward almost killed her.
Sif take Lorelei away, but before she goes, Sif apologizes for all the damage that was done to the plane. May lets her know that the plane has seen worse. Coulson asks Sif why she is bringing Lorelei back. Sif says that she is a good warrior and Odin commands it.
(SPOILER for Thor: The Dark World)
I am wondering if it was Odin-Odin or Loki-Odin that commanded Sif to bring Lorelei back. Coulson tells May that she should talk with Ward about what happened and May tells Coulson he should do the same thing with Skye.
May is getting the plane ready for take off when Ward visits her, to apologize for what had happened. May tells him that he didn’t hurt her and that he needs to be honest with himself, because he was more honest with Lorelei then he was with her. I guess May and Ward will no longer be having sex.
Coulson visits Skye to tell her about what he saw, but Skye does not care. She is happy that it worked and was able to save them both. This angers Coulson because nothing seems to faze Skye. Skye talks about how they are both in the dark about everything, but they were saved by an alien and how she is an 0-8-4. Coulson then vows that they will find out everything and they are going to start with the person that shot her.
Onto the bonus scene, we hear Coulson and Skye talking, only it’s coming through a speaker in the cockpit of the plane. May was listening on the conversation, why was May listening in. Then May picks up a hidden phone in the console, she dials a number and says that Coulson knows. WTF, apparently May was sent there to keep an eye on Coulson. I am guessing the Nick Fury was the one who sent her.
Of course, I was happy to see Lady Sif in this episode; it was great to see more with of her. Especially since she was so under developed in the movies and since Whedon is writing this show, I had hopes that Sif would be a stronger character. She was and she wasn’t, I got to see more of her character background and her awesome fighting skills. At the same time, there was not much more than what I had seen with her character before. I am happy that they are incorporating characters from the various Avengers lore; in this case, it is characters from Thor.
I will say this I am not all for the love triangles, granted May and Ward are done so it is not a triangle but still I don’t like that there was an implied one. At first, I thought that Ward and Skye would make a cute couple and I thought that maybe Ward had something for Skye.
I would be fine with Skye and Ward but I don’t like him having unrequited feelings for Skye that he was hiding. More importantly, that Ward was hiding from them by sleeping with May. While we are talking about May can we talk about how she is spying on Coulson. It has to be for Fury because there is no other person who would do that. May is the same level as Coulson so she would know things. I am trying not to hold this against May and I am going to wait two weeks before passing judgment on her.
It will be two weeks before we have another new episode of Agents of SHIELD. Next week we will be getting some behind the scene information to upcoming Marvel movies and Agents of SHIELD.
