Excited news for all Sherlock fans, Sherlock will be back for a special followed by another three episode season. Martin Freeman had previous hinted at a possible special being filmed: Sherlock Special. Later reports said that it might be a Christmas special, I know I was excited to hear about a possible Sherlock special. I am pretty sure all the other fans were as well because we all know how long the wait is for Sherlock episodes.
Well accord to Variety filming for the special will begin in January of 2015, filming of the other three episodes happening afterwards. Variety is saying that we will see Sherlock season 4 in 2015. While that is still a long wait because there is no confirmed air date but it will more than likely be towards the end of 2015.
Mark Gatiss had this to say, “Series four! At last! It’s always special to return to ‘Sherlock’ but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a special! Not only that, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole ‘Sherlock’ team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The game is on — again!”
Steven Moffett had this to say, “A special, plus a new series of three episodes — it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”
Both Gatiss and Moffett are teasing that we should expect an amazing new season that will take us places we never imagined. I think it is safe to say that we should be ready for new twists & turns and surprises. With Moffett at the helm none of that should be a shock.
While it will still be a long wait before we see the next season it is great to know that it will be happening and we should only have about a year to year and half wait. Even though I would love for the new season to happen sooner, I am happy that we will be getting another season of Sherlock.
As any Sherlock fan knows it can sometimes be a really long wait between series, like a 2 year wait. I know I am dying for series 4, especially with how last season ended. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch both have busy schedules so it has been hard finding time to film the next series. Freeman has teased about a possible one-off special happening:
“Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it, I thought, ‘We’ve just got to do this.’ And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it.“
No word on when that might happen because again they both have really busy schedules. It is probably easier for them to film a one-off then a full 3 episode season. A special episode would help fill the gap between the series and make the wait not seem as long. At this time there is not word on when series 4 will be happening so we might be in for another 2 year wait.
Would you rather have a full series of Sherlock or would you be happy with a one-off special episode?
I have been wondering what I would write about since most shows are either on hiatus or are done for the season. Since this is a site was created by women I thought maybe I should take the time to look at the women in the geek culture. I thought I would start with Sherlock since the season/series is done for now. Also because Sherlock is an interesting one, the original stories are set in Victorian England. During that time, women did not have the rights or advantages that women today have.
“One of the interesting things about Sherlock, as a show, is that we want to stick very close to the style and approach of the original stories, but the one big problem is that there are no women, and what women do turn up are not that great. They’re a bit boring. Not all of them, but most of them are not very interesting. He didn’t seem that comfortable with women, but the two boys are fantastic. I sometimes forget that Mrs. Hudson doesn’t really speak in the original, and we’ve given her a big part.” – Moffat
This had to be a challenge for the writers and creators of Sherlock because they have to find a way to modernize these women while still keeping them true to the original story. In a lot of ways, the writers and creators have managed to do this. Unfortunately, because of this people sometimes claim that show is sexist. I don’t see that at all, I actually think they did a good job trying to modernize the characters. Lets take a look at the ladies of Sherlock.
(These will contain spoilers)
Molly was solely created for the show, that is not unheard of lots of shows will sometimes create new characters. Molly works in the morgue of the hospital so that already suggests that she is educated. While she does not have a doctorate, she knows a great deal about science and the human body. She does help Sherlock fake his own death. Molly is smart; there is no denying that. While Molly comes off socially awkward – this is really not all that shocking since she works in a morgue, she also comes off quite, mousey and not having a lot of self-confidence. I know there are many women who have an issue with the huge crush that Molly has on Sherlock.
In some ways they feel like this is all there is to Molly, that she is defined by her feelings for Sherlock. I did not see it like that; I saw it in a Hunger Games kind of way, where the crush made him look desirable. Sherlock was more appealing because someone else thought he was, it is human nature we always like someone more when someone else finds them attractive. The writers could have kept Molly defined by her crush on Sherlock by having her wait for him while he was away, but they didn’t. Molly moved on and found someone else granted he was a Sherlock look-alike but hey that happens some people have a type. In the very last episode they had Molly get angry and slap him multiples time because she was mad at him for doing drugs again.
Molly might have started off as mousey woman who had a huge crush on Sherlock but in the end she becomes a strong woman who sees him for what he really is.
As Moffat mentioned earlier Mrs. Hudson doesn’t speak in the original stories. Mrs. Hudson was their landlady; she collected the rent, cooks and cleans for Sherlock and John. In the stories, John has often said Mrs. Hudson is fond of Sherlock and that is why she put up with all his antics. Mrs. Hudson on the show does put up with Sherlock’s antics but they have her do it because she is grateful for Sherlock’s help when it came to her late husband. A Victorian landlady might cook and clean for her tenants but not a modern-day one. This has become a running joke on the show, because Sherlock and John are always asking Mrs. Hudson to do things for them and she constantly tells them it is not her job, but then she does it. I feel that the reason Mrs. Hudson does cooking and cleaning for Sherlock and John because she loves them and feels maternal towards them.
They have no one else to take care of them and Mrs. Hudson wants to take care of them, they both adore her. That was very evident in the Scandal in Belgravia when Sherlock repeatedly drops a guy out the window because he hurt Mrs. Hudson. I don’t know about the rest of you but if a guy is going to repeatedly drop someone out a window for hurting me the least I could do is cook him some food.
Mary Morstan Watson
Mary in the stories is a governess, which is a common job for women of that day. Her mother died in childbirth and her is a Senior Captain of an Indian regiment. In the Sherlock Holmes stories, Mary really has no other job besides being John’s wife. While Mary is probably one of the more developed characters from the stories, she is still under developed. I do appreciate that Moffat made her a nurse at John’s practice. While it was a slight shock that Mary had been an assassin, it was needed.
If they had just left her as a nurse then she would have just been John’s wife. By making her an assassin, they gave her a background that puts her on the same level John and Sherlock. John is an intelligent doctor who helps solves crimes on the side; he needs a strong intelligent woman. That was definitely a challenge for the writers and creators, but they did a great job with it. More importantly, they managed to do it while keeping the love and bond between them intact.
I do appreciate John’s reaction when he finds out what Mary had been, that was a very real reaction. Even in a day an age when women are strong and independent, men still want to be the protectors. With Mary being an assassin, it means she doesn’t need John to protect her, because she can do it herself. Besides the fact that John was lied to in a way, he was also emasculated, that hurt his pride and ego. The writers did an amazing job of showing how modern of a man John is, because he could have left her and found someone else but he didn’t. If Moffat and the writers were sexist that is what they would have done, but instead they made John forgive her and continue to love her.
Now onto my favorite character, Irene Adler, in the original story she is an opera singer who once had a liaison with the King of Bohemia. Sherlock is brought in to retrieve a photo that Irene has of her and the King. While Sherlock does obtain the photo, Irene manages to outwit him and get the photo back. Irene leaves behind a photo of herself and a note; Sherlock asks to keep the photo of Irene as payment for the case. In Sherlock, Irene is not an opera singer, yes a case could be made that they were being sexiest by making her a dominatrix. I don’t see that as being sexiest, even though they highly sexualized Irene, it fits. The opera is not the huge draw or form of entertainment that it was in the Victorian era. Moffat had to create an occupation for Irene that would put her in the position to have incriminating photos and a sexual background. They also needed to create something that would shock Sherlock and would make her intelligent, for that reason I am all right with her being a dominatrix. While it is sexiest to make her a dominatrix, it was also very empowering to make her one. She is a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and her own sexuality, something most women in today’s age are not.
I also appreciate that they gave her an emotional side by making Irene fall for Sherlock. While I am sure some people did not like this about her because it might weaken her, I actually love it. If they did not do that, then they would have just made Irene out to be a manipulative woman who does not care about anyone but herself. To make her actually care/love Sherlock gives her emotions, it makes her human. I personally would have hated her if she did not have that caring side.
To keep with the original character Moffat made her smart and she does manage to outwit Sherlock. While in the original stories it is stated that Sherlock is only interested in her resourcefulness and intelligence I do appreciate while they made that the initial interest, that they let Sherlock grow to care about her. Just like in the original story, Sherlock keeps a memento from the case with Irene – in this case it was her phone.
I understand that some people might have their issues with how Moffat has written these characters. Molly was originally defined by her crush on Sherlock, Mrs. Hudson does too much for the boys and lets them boss her around, Mary is a liar, and Irene is dominatrix. At the time Molly grew out of her crush, Mrs. Hudson is actually rather maternal, Mary needs to be strong in order to be the perfect wife for John, and Irene is strong, confident, and smart.
“All the women he meets decode him so fast. Mrs. Hudson just thinks he’s a spoiled brat, who she quite likes. Irene [Adler] gets it totally. She can close him down with a smile, and she gets that. Molly, initially, was awestruck, but so quickly got what he is. So, bringing the female perspective onto Sherlock is brilliant, I think. It works so well. And Mary is such a good example of it.” – Moffat
Moffat puts is very well, all the women in his life are able to decode him, because they are all smart. I don’t think that Moffat did a horrible job of writing these women, he just had the difficult task of making strong confident women from characters that were not written that way initially. While at the same time trying to keep with the original integrity of the story and try to keep them close to how they were originally written. I don’t think that Moffat or the other writers of Sherlock did a bad job, they might have been able to do better but they could have done a whole lot worse.

Here we are at the series finale of season 3 of Sherlock. These seasons are way to short; we need more than 3 episodes. Lets recap what happened last episode, John and Mary got married and the photographer tried to kill one of John’s old army buddies. Sherlock told the most awkward yet touching best man speech ever.
Charles Augustus Magnussen (the new villain) goes into Lady Smallwoods study. Lady Smallwood warns him that they cannot be seen together but Magnussen does not listen. He tells Lady Smallwood he is in possession of letters that her husband sent to a 15-year-old girl. Lady Smallwood says that she knows all about them but once her husband learned the girl’s age, he stopped. Magnussen says he has pictures as well; for the most part, he is blackmailing her. That is what Magnussen does he is blackmails people.
Before Magnussen leaves he makes sure to lick Lady Smallwood’s face, seriously is face licking starting to become a thing. I do not find the appeal in having my face licked. Lady Smallwood does a very brilliant thing and hires Sherlock to find the letters.
John and Mary’s neighbor comes by asking for John’s help in getting her son back from a drug den. John goes over there; he took some notes from Sherlock’s playbook because he was all badass. He even grabbed the guy in an arm restraint. John goes upstairs where he finds his neighbor’s son and finds Sherlock. Naturally, Sherlock thinks John is there to see him. Mary is waiting outside in the car where she has to order a bickering John and Sherlock into the car. She also has to take the guy that John injured (sprained his arm) as well. John confirms that it is a sprain because he is a doctor and knows how to sprain someone. I would hope so because otherwise what good was medical school.
They are at the hospital because John wants Sherlock checked for drugs. Molly gets some balls from I don’t know where and slaps Sherlock across the face multiple times.
During this, we find out that Molly is no longer in engaged, I wonder if that had anything to do with why she slapped him.
Back at the flat Mycroft visits where he is a huge ass, because well that is what Mycroft is. Mycroft did manage to figure out that Sherlock is trying to take on Magnussen. Mycroft tells Sherlock to stop what he is doing. Sherlock finally has enough of Mycroft and goes after him. It’s about time someone went to put Mycroft in his place because he can be such a pretentious ass. While Mycroft was there, he remarked on the fact that Sherlock’s door is closed. Growing up Sherlock never closed his door, unless forced by their mother. Magnussen comes by to see Sherlock and John because of the letters that Lady Smallwood wants. Magnussen pretty much tells them that he will not give them the letters. Apparently, if you don’t let Magnussen go to the bathroom he will pee in your fireplace. Serious who pees in someone’s fireplace, I guess face licking people do.
While John is waiting for Sherlock to get out of the bath Janine (Mary’s maid of honor) comes out of Sherlock’s bedroom wearing nothing but Sherlock’s shirt.
First of only Irene can be in Sherlock’s room wearing nothing but his shirt. If I have to, I will settle for Molly, but not this chick who does she thinks she is. I am not all right with this chick coming out of Sherlock’s room in nothing but his shirt. Sherlock and Janine are cuddling and being cute (barf) on the chair.
Janine leaves but before she does she kisses Sherlock, again who does this chick think she is. John cannot get past the fact that Sherlock is dating someone so he pretty much does not listen to anything that Sherlock says.
John and Sherlock go to Magnussen house where Sherlock uses Janine to let him because she works for Magnussen. Now it all makes sense what he is doing with her. I should mention he gets her to let him in by holding a ring and in essence proposing to her. When they get inside they find Janine knocked out and it is deduced that the person who did it is still in-house. Sherlock goes off to investigate and finds a person holding a gun at Magnussen. This person is wearing the same perfume as Lady Smallwood, so naturally Sherlock thinks it is Lady Smallwood. The assassin person turns around and its Mary – WTF.
Mary is an assassin, when did this happen and how did she manage to trick Sherlock. Well of course, Mary can’t have Sherlock telling John about her so she shoots him. This would not have been as bad but Sherlock when to his mind palace which was cool. Molly visits Sherlock to help him understand what is happening to him because he was shot.
Mycroft shows up again to help Sherlock figure out that the bullet did not pass through his body. Molly then tells Sherlock that he has to fall and use gravity to help dislodge the bullet. Sherlock goes crazy while he is going into shock. While he is dying in the hospital Sherlock goes into the crazy part of his mind palace where a chained up Moriarty taunts him.
That is actually a help because when he mention John that get Sherlock to fight. Then Sherlock does a miraculous recovery I mean miraculous because he was declared dead.
When Mary hears from John that Sherlock survived the shooting she makes sure to go down there and warns him not to tell John about what he saw. When Sherlock wakes up and Janine is there all pissed because she realized the he was only using her.
She messed with his morphine drip; there is nothing worse than a woman scorned.
John goes to visit the hospital with Lestrade only to find Sherlock missing from the hospital room. Did we really think that Sherlock would listen to the doctors and stay in the hospital bed like a good boy? Now starts the hunt to find Sherlock, John and Lestrade are looking for him, as is Mary. While John is at Baker Street he is very confused as to why Sherlock would put his chair back out. When John looks at the table, next to him he see the perfume that Mary and Lady Smallwood wear. John knows that Sherlock knows who shot him because of the trajectory of the bullet, but why is Sherlock not saying anything, who is he trying to protect?
Mary is out searching for Sherlock and she gets some help from the homeless network that Sherlock uses. Sherlock knew that Mary would go to them to help find him. It leads her to a building that Sherlock happens to own because he won it in a card game, I guess he’s Han Solo now. Mary enters the building where she shows Sherlock how well she can fire a gun. Sherlock tricks her by coming from behind Mary. Mary begs Sherlock not to tell John because she cannot lose him and she will not lose him.
Unfortunately, John is smart and had been in the room the whole time so he heard everything. It is during this time that Sherlock realizes that the clues have been there all the time, the fact they she knew what kind of coded text message had been sent and her great memory.
Sherlock orders everyone to Baker Street, where Mrs. Hudson is happy to see Sherlock. John is mad by this point because everyone he meets and is in his life is a psychopath. Sherlock tells John that those are the kinds of people he is attracted to and that he likes a certain kind of life. Mary even confirms this by telling John that he knew what she was and still married her. Sherlock and John take Mary on as a client, where she tells them that she had been an assassin. Magnussen has information on her that is why she went after him. Mary gives John a USB drive with all of her information on it. Sherlock called an ambulance to the flat because he knew that he was going to need medical attention since he left the hospital to soon.
It fast-forwards a few months to Christmas, which is being spent at the Sherlock family home. I was excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch’s real life parents reprise their roles as Sherlock’s parents.
We learn that Sherlock’s mom is brilliant that she had been a mathematician who had a book published. We also learn that Mary and John had been a bit estranged during this time. John had decided that he loves Mary and that her past does not matter but her future does because is contains him. John takes her USB drive that he had not read and throws it into the fire. Sherlock and Mycroft are outside smoking which they have to hide from their mother because she does not approve.
Mycroft tells Sherlock there was an M16 mission that he would have been a great assent on but Mycroft could not send him because he would die, it would kill Mycroft to lose his brother. Sherlock is shocked to hear this information. When they go back into the house, it is discovered that Sherlock had drugged everyone in the house but John who he takes on a helicopter where they head to Magnussen’s house.
While at Magnussen’s home Sherlock offers to trade Mycroft’s laptop, which contains valuable information for what Magnussen has on Mary. Unfortunately, all of Magnussen’s information is in his head because he has a memory much like Sherlock’s.
It as interesting to watch Magnussen go through how he found Mary’s information because he has to mime much of what he did in his memory. Mycroft must have woken up during this time because he shows up at Magnussen’s house with a ton of government agents. By offering to trade that laptop for information, Sherlock and John were committing high treason. While standing outside of Magnussen’s home Magnussen taunts Sherlock and John. Sherlock takes out a gun and shoots Magnussen – I was like what. Sherlock had to because it was the only want to protect John and Mary. Myrcroft is in the helicopter yelling at the agents not to shoot his brother.
In a later meeting, Mycroft is doing everything he can to get Sherlock out of jail and put him on trial. Mycroft reminds them that there will always be a time when they need Sherlock Holmes. Mycroft convinces them to send Sherlock on the M16 mission that would get him killed.
At an airfield John and Mary say good-bye to Sherlock since he will be leaving. Sherlock tries to convince John to name the baby after him by telling him his full name. John says the baby is probably going to be a girl, Sherlock then says that Sherlock is a girl’s name.
Sherlock leaves on the plane and while this is happening all the TV’s are taken over by Moriarty who is asking if people missed him. Mycroft is shocked to learn this information and he calls Sherlock. After a quick four-minute trip on the private plane, Sherlock is called back to London to help with a possible Moriarty problem.
I liked this episode because it had a good amount of WTF moments. Sherlock having a gf was a shock and was crazy. Of course, I was not feeling that because well I am all about Irene and Sherlock. Mary being an assassin was kind of crazy but at the same time I remember thinking that there was something about her when she knew the kind of coded messages had been sent to her in episode 1 of this season. I was not expecting it to come out that she was some kind of a badass assassin. I did appreciate Sherlock realizing that Mary could have killed him but she choose not to. I appreciated Magnussen as a villain; I think he was good for Sherlock because Magnussen was manipulative. Not to mention Magnussen is creepy crazy not like Joker crazy which is what Moriarty seems like to me. Of course Moriarty not being dead is a huge moment at the end, but at the same time is seems that they needed something big to bring back Sherlock. I have to say this was great episode it had a lot of good moment, which was an improvement over the last episode. As much as I loved Sherlock’s speech and how they did it, the bulk of the episode was the speech.
Until the next series and there is supposed to be a series 4 and 5 according to Moffet.
Here we are on the second episode of Sherlock and half way though the season. Lets recap last week’s episode, well Sherlock came back from the “dead” to help solve a terrorist case. John punched Sherlock for making him think that he died.
This week’s episode starts of with an exceptionally angry Detective Lestrade.
As Lestrade it getting to a crime scene he receives a text message from Sherlock saying help, Baker Street, please come, help. Naturally, Lestrade thinks that there is something wrong. Lestrade gets to Sherlock who needs help with his best man speech. Lestrade is completely annoyed with the fact that Sherlock called him over for something so dumb. Come on we all know how Sherlock is, Lestrade should have known better. Lestrade did not realize that Sherlock will text him over something stupid so Lestrade had called in everyone to rush over to Baker Street.
Mrs. Hudson talks with Sherlock about how he feels about John’s upcoming wedding and his speech. We will find out later that Molly was very worried about Sherlock giving the best man speech. We see everyone come out of the wedding ceremony and take pictures. Of course Sherlock doesn’t get that he not suppose to be in all the pictures.
The maid of honor lets Sherlock know about the tradition of the best man sleeping with the maid of honor. Instead, Sherlock does what he can to help her find a guy at the wedding. Before the wedding Sherlock had interrogated some of Mary’s male friends especially those who were ex’s to see if she might cheat on John. He even gave some of them stipulations about the amount of times they can see her and how often they can call or text.
James Sholto arrives at the wedding and he is an old war friend of John’s. Mary did not think that James was going to come to the wedding. Sherlock was very unhappy to find out that John talks about James all the time but not about him. We all know how Sherlock get jealous easily when it comes to sharing John, no wonder most people think they are gay.
Most the episode is Sherlock’s best man speech with clips of other cases and events interspersed in.
With some reminding Sherlock remembers to read the telegrams, which are well wishes from people who were not able to attend. Sherlock starts by reading each one individually but then goes to cliff noting them. Sherlock begins with saying how he felt about John asking him to be his best man. While Sherlock tells everyone at the wedding, he had all this emotions about it. In reality, he just stood there frozen and staring at John. Which I have to say was rather hilarious. Sherlock really did not understand that he was John’s best friend.
The first movement that Sherlock does after that is to drink his coffee, which has an eyeball in it, Sherlock had been playing with the eyeball earlier and dropped it into his coffee on accident. According to Sherlock, an eyeball will not make the coffee taste bad; while I trust him, I don’t think I will be adding it to my coffee anytime soon.
Sherlock continues his awkward speech and I mean awkward speech by insulting the whole idea of marriage and pretty much everyone in the room. Come on, its Sherlock did we expect him to give a non insulting speech. Then Sherlock turns it around by saying all these great and wonderful things about John. How John is caring, warm, intelligent, and a wonderful man and how Sherlock is honored to be his best friend. Sherlock had everyone in the room crying, some how he turned the speech around. More importantly, Sherlock showed emotions and that he is an actually normal person, I am not sure how I feel about this.
Since Sherlock read a book on how to do the best man speech, he naturally followed every suggestion, so he chooses some funny stories. Sherlock goes on to talk about John’s blog (we all know how much Sherlock loves John’s blog) and mention a few their adventures by name. One of which includes an actual elephant in the room. Sherlock chooses to mention the story of the Bloody Guardsman, which is about a royal guard who is being stalked. While the guard has told others, no one seems to really believe him. Sherlock puts on one of the guards hats and sneaks in while John talks to the man in charge of the guards.
While John is talking with him, another guard runs in telling them that the guy who they were investigating (Bainbridge) is dead. John asks to examine the body but the head guard won’t let him because he thinks he is lying about being a doctor since John told him that he had been a soldier earlier. John yells at him telling him that he had been a soldier and was a doctor. By this time, they have brought in Sherlock who had been sneaking around. The head guard thinks that Sherlock did it but Sherlock puts all that to rest. Bainbridge had been killed in the shower and Sherlock is not at all wet. Sherlock investigates the scene and John examines the body. During John’s examination, we find out that Bainbridge is not dead, John asks his nurse (Sherlock) to put pressure on the wound. Sherlock does a Q&A (its Sherlock) asking people if they can figure out what the best point of the story is. Lestrade and Tom (Molly’s Fiancé) try to guess how it happened, but Sherlock being unSherlock says the best thing is how John saves lives. While Sherlock can deduce the mystery, John is amazing because he can save lives.
Then Sherlock recounts the bachelor party which I would like to note was just John and Sherlock. Sherlock decides that him and John should do a drink everywhere they found a body. After talking with Molly, Sherlock decides to conduct an experiment about drinking by using 40 ml test tubes.
After some drinking and John sneaking shots, we see John and Sherlock drunk, and somewhat sleeping on the stairs of the flat. Mrs. Hudson comes in asking them what they are doing back so soon since they had only been out 2 hours. Then Sherlock and John play a guessing game, they have to guess who the person or thing is stuck to their head.
During this time, a client comes in and during her story Sherlock and John fall asleep. She tells them that she went on a date with a ghost. Sherlock decides to take the case and they both go over to the crime scene still drunk. Sherlock starts to investigate but he falls asleep while doing it and also throws up in the apt. Lucky for both John and Sherlock Lestrade is able to get them out of jail the next day.
Sherlock becomes very intrigued by the case and deduces that the man is not dead but actually someone who uses the names and places of the recently deceased. Sherlock questions some of the girls that had been on a date with this man (in his head by this point) but he cannot find a connection between them. Until he remembers, that Tessa had used John’s full name when she had introduced himself and John to the superintendent. It took years for Sherlock to learn John’s middle name and he had to find his birth certificate. The only other female who knows John’s middle name is the amazing Irene Adler. Enter Irene Adler into Sherlock’s head as she reaches out to him he tells her no he is working he does not have time for her which suggest that Sherlock thinks about Irene at times.
Then Sherlock remembers that John’s middle name was printed on the wedding invitations. That means Tessa saw the wedding invitation and that the killer is at the wedding and after someone at the wedding.
By this point Sherlock’s speech has gone all crazy because he is deducing the answer to the crime while trying to talk to everyone else so sometimes he slips and has to cover it. Sherlock also realizes that the royal guard it connected, the killer used him as a run through of his plan by stabbing him through his belt, in by doing so the belt was the only thing keeping him from bleeding out. How to figure out who would be the target well Sherlock had to figure out who you would want to kill at a wedding.
It would have to be someone who does not go out much and lives remotely – John’s friend James Sholto. Sherlock gives him a message saying that he is the target. John asks Sherlock to end his crazy long speech because they have a cake to cut. Sherlock does and Sholto uses this time to leave the room. Sherlock quickly explains to John what is going on and John gives Mary a kiss and runs off to help Sherlock. They are on their way to Sholto’s room but Sherlock cannot remember which one it is but Mary shows up and tells them which one. They all arrive outside the door but Sholto has locked it, he has his gun his lap. Sholto won’t come out until Sherlock convinces him that they would not do this to John on his wedding day. Sholto has John come in and help him out.
Sherlock then later on deduces that the photographer was the killer. The photographer’s brother had been in Sholto’s platoon when it had been attacked and he had died. Lestrade then arrests the photographer.
Sherlock is later dancing off to the side with the maid of honor because he wanted to practice for when they had to dance later. Sherlock tells her that he actually loves to dance. Sherlock plays the violin during John and Mary’s dance and after he is done he give them a small speech where he says three instead of two.
Later on, the dance floor he tells Mary that he knows that she is pregnant. John is mad that he did not realize it since he is a doctor but Sherlock tells them that he is happy for them. After seeing that everyone was happy and dancing at the wedding Sherlock puts on his coat and leaves with a smile on his face.
I have to say I enjoyed seeing John’s wedding, I would have much rather seen him get married in his uniform like they had him do in Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. I knew Sherlock’s speech was going to be interesting; I have to say they did not disappoint. It started horribly awkward but it did have some amazing touching moments. I do wish that his speech had not been pretty much the whole episode but they did do it in such a creative way that I don’t feel like I lost anything. I am sad that all we saw of Irene Adler was a blip; she is my favorite character from the show. I know that she is only in one story but I really wish I could see more of her.
I was kinda hoping that Sherlock visited her during his 2-year absence but that remains to be seen. While he said wonders where she is, that could mean since the last time he saw which was either when he saved her or during the 2 year absence I am hoping for the later so we can see some flashback scenes. I was happy to see everyone was at the wedding granted Mycroft did not attend but he had been invited. I am wondering if the place we saw Sherlock talk to the girls was his mind palace, it would be really exciting if it was. I am definitely looking forward to seeing Sherlock’s reaction to when John and Mary’s baby is born. Everyone was trying to explain to him that things will change now that John and Mary are married.
Until next week when I recap the season finale,
Sherlock, well I have to say I have only just gotten into this show, but for those of you who have seen my New Years blog know this. I pretty much saw all 6 episodes in a week. I love Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock; he is absolutely amazing in the role. I was definitely excited to see the Season 3 Premiere. Where did season 2 leave off… well Sherlock was presumed dead.
In order to save the lives of John, Mrs. Hudson and Detective Lestrade, Sherlock had to die otherwise Moriarty would have them killed. To ensure that Sherlock would die, Moriarty killed himself. Moriarty was not as bright as he thought because he never thought that Sherlock cared for Molly. Sherlock went to Molly to help him with what he needed to do.
The episode starts with a telling of how Sherlock survived, he basically put a Sherlock mask on a dead Moriarty who was the dead body on the street.
Sherlock jumped off the building with the aid of bungee cord. The cord pulls Sherlock back up and he crashes though the window and kisses Molly.
Which we all know the Sherlock and Molly shippers went crazy over. Then Sherlock leaves the hospital while John finds the dead body. This turns out to only be a theory that Anderson tells to Lestrade. Lestrade does not believe the theory.
Then we are taken to another place Siberia more than likely, where a guy with long hair is being beaten up. It turns out that Sherlock is the one being beaten and that Mycroft is sitting there just letting it happen because he cannot blow his cover. Mycroft brings Sherlock back to London to help uncover a terrorist plot. When Sherlock gets back to London a Ms. Congenitally/ Hunger Games treatment is performed on him to make him look like his usual self.
I dunno I was kinda feeling the long curly hair.
John finally visits 221B Baker Street since Sherlock “died,” Mrs. Hudson is happy to see him but sad that he has not tried to contact her. John tells her that he has found someone who Mrs. Hudson naturally assumes it is a guy. John tells her that is a girl and that he is not gay. Some men just have a hard time accepting that they are in a bromance, let’s be fair Sherlock and John are one of the original bromances.
Sherlock goes the restaurant that John plans on proposing to his girlfriend at, even though Mycroft told him that John might not be happy to see him. Sherlock obviously does not listen and disguises himself as a French waiter with various items he picks up throughout the restaurant.
Eventually Sherlock lets John know that it is him since John was too nervous about the proposal to notice. It takes Mary a few moments but based on John’s reaction she figures out that it is Sherlock. I thought John was going to punch Sherlock but he didn’t he punches the table instead.
When Sherlock makes fun of John’s mustache then John launched himself at the Sherlock knocking him down in the restaurant. Sherlock talks with John and Mary at another place but does not give John the answer that he needs which is why did he stay away for 2 years. Eventually John gets completely pissed off (he never gets pissed at Sherlock) and punches Sherlock in the face. I knew this was going to happen because John was so distraught over the loss of Sherlock there is no way he would not have an intense reaction to him being alive. Mary tells Sherlock that she will talk to John and Sherlock does his look at you deduction technique.
I have to say this is one of my favorite aspects about Sherlock that he can look at a person and deduct a great deal about them.
Sherlock visits Lestrade to let him know he is still alive and Lestrade reacts the best out of everyone by giving him a big hug. Poor Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock gives her such a fright when he comes back. He also reveals himself to Molly who naturally knew that he was not dead.
Another version of how Sherlock survived is told Sherlock has a fake body attached to a cord while he talks to John; it’s the fake body that falls. Sherlock and Moriarty are sitting on the roof laughing about it because they are romantically involved.
This turns out to be a lame story made up by the Sherlock fan club. During this time the TV say that Sherlock is alive and then their cell phones go off letting them know Sherlock is alive. I have to say that I love it when Sherlock texts various people at the same time.
Mycroft comes by to visit Sherlock and to see how he is doing on the case. Well they play a game of operation, which is just hilarious. Then Sherlock and Mycroft get into basically a who has the bigger penis contest by showing off their brains in a deduction game.
Sherlock invites Molly to solve crimes with him, so she takes down notes during some of the meetings. While John is having a normal day in the office until he freaks out thinking that one of his new patients is Sherlock – the patient is not Sherlock. Sherlock and Molly visit a client who shows Sherlock footage of underground trains. Basically someone got onto one of the trains but never gets off. Sherlock deduces that this man is actually Lord Moran. Sherlock and Molly visit a crime scene with Lestrade, which just has a skeleton. Sherlock turns into a bloodhound by sniffing the body so that he can gain some more information on it. On the way out Sherlock and Molly talk about how she won’t be able to do this. Molly thanks Sherlock for the day and tells him that she is engaged. Sherlock thanks Molly for helping him fake his death and gives her a kiss on the cheek as he wishes her the best.
John went by 221B Baker Street, but on his way there, he is drugged and kidnapped by some guys. Mary gets a few random text that do not make any sense at first but then she deduces that there is a hidden message telling her that John is in trouble. Mary runs to Sherlock who she asks for help finding John. Sherlock commandeers a motorcycle in probably the best way possible by just putting his hand up.
Mary and Sherlock race across London to save John. Where Sherlock maps out a route to go and calculating the time it would take them to arrive. They make in just enough time before John is burned alive.
This would not have been as bad if the guy who kidnapped John was not trying to kill him in front of his daughter.
John naturally goes over the next day to talk to Sherlock because what else is he going to do the guy did help save his life. Sherlock’s parents are leaving when John gets there (side note those are Benedict Cumberbatch’s real parents). John is shocked to see how ordinary they are. John notices Sherlock’s wall and Sherlock begins to tell him about the case. They get a video call from the client that Sherlock visited with Molly. Sherlock realizes that during that time not only did Lord Moran disappear but that his whole train car did as well. The client helps them figure out where the car might have disappeared.
Sherlock and John race down to the underground tunnels, John tells Sherlock that he should call the cops but of course, Sherlock doesn’t. I would like to say that I love how John got right back into being a detective with Sherlock, it was almost like the 2 years never happened.
They eventually find the car that they think is carrying the bomb only to find out that the train car is actually the bomb. Lord Moran actually set the bomb remotely, giving John and Sherlock only 2 ½ minutes to defuse the bomb. John naturally thinks that Sherlock knows how to defuse the bomb because well its Sherlock and he can do anything. Sherlock tells him that he does not and hopes that John does since he had been a soldier. John makes Sherlock go to his mind palace because somewhere inside there should be the information on how to defuse the bomb. Sherlock tells him that there not, both men have a moment as they brace for death.
We are shown a scene of Sherlock being recorded, yay they did not die in the train car. Sherlock is telling someone about how he faked his death; basically he had the whole thing set up with Molly and his brother Mycroft. Sherlock made John stand in that location so he would not see anything that is going on. When Sherlock jumped, he landed on a giant air cushion. Sherlock arranges for John to be knocked down which give Sherlock time to get off the air cushion and lay down on the ground with fake blood. Sherlock made sure to find a way to stop his pulse because he knew that John would be sure to check. Sherlock had figured out that Moriarty had found someone who looked like him because Moriarty had a little girl convinced that Sherlock kidnapped her. That is where Molly comes in because she got a hold of that corpse to help fake Sherlock’s’ death. It turns out that Sherlock is telling this all to Anderson, who had arranged the skeleton death earlier. Anderson finds the problems in Sherlock’s story making him doubt that he was even told the real story.
Back on the train car, well I guess we all got excited too soon. Maybe we didn’t because Sherlock starts to laugh, apparently there was an off switch on the bomb that Sherlock has flipped, the bomb was stopped at 1 ½ minutes. John is naturally annoyed at Sherlock for making him think that they were going to die. The cops come a few moments later to help them Sherlock had called them. As Lord Moran tries to escape, the cops stop him.
John comes by the next day and tells Sherlock everything he has said at his grave, the most important being that he asked him to not be dead. Sherlock tells John that he know because he had been there. We learn that Mary and Mrs. Hudson are there as well, because Sherlock and John is are going to be talking to press about the terrorist incident. Molly comes by with her fiancé who looks very much like Sherlock but everyone makes sure not to say anything. Sherlock goes outside to talk to the press wearing the iconic Sherlock Holmes hat.
Somewhere is a warehouse looking place there is a creepy looking guy watching the footage of Sherlock saving John.
I have to say I enjoyed this episode, but then again I always enjoy Sherlock. It was a great way to bring him back to London and it was so interesting to see how many people actually knew he was alive and who didn’t. I also appreciated all the different how he survived stories. It almost reminds me of the Joker telling his origin or how he got the scars story. It was great to see how everyone had moved on with their lives well except for Mycroft. I really appreciated that with Molly since she knew that Sherlock was alive, that she was able to move with her life. I cannot tell you how happy I was to see John punch Sherlock, besides the fact that we have all been waiting for that, John was lied to, and he had a right to be pissed. I would have done the exact same thing only sooner. This was honestly the perfect way to bring him back to London.
I have to say one of my favorite things about this show is that they show us how Sherlock’s mind works. I love seeing that, I enjoy it so much when he just looks at someone and can deduce so much about their lives.
It was also great to see Sherlock map out the path to save John and to include ETA times. Seriously it is amazing to see his brain in action, I wish mine did that. I would love to be able to do even a quarter of what he does.
Lets talk about the mustache; you really didn’t think I was not going to talk about it.
I already knew about it and everything else because thanks to other social media sites and England getting it first people were already taking about it. I had no official opinion on the mustache until I saw the episode yea it needed to go. I have no idea what John was thinking, but I think that was great creative writing. The only person who could get John to shave it was Sherlock; right after Sherlock makes fun of it… it is gone.
Join me next week as John asks Sherlock to be his best man and as John marries Mary.
